Katherine to Keep River National Park 5 day drive itinerary

If you're looking for something a little different that will allow you to view gorgeous escarpments, river systems, waterfalls, and outback Australia, the Victoria River region west of Katherine is the place to go. From Cairns in Queensland to Broome in Western Australia, the Savannah Way runs east to west (or vice-versa). This route connects with the Katherine route and continues on to Keep River National Park for the finest short driving escape.

Day 1: Katherine to Victoria River region

The Victoria River Roadhouse is a two-and-a-half-hour trip from Katherine. Plan on taking at least one of the hikes, such as the Escarpment Walk or the Joe Creek Picnic Area and Nawulbinbin Walk, which are all moderate walks with a few steep sections - but well worth it. There are several fantastic AWD land base fishing sites where you might even catch a barra. For more information, stop by the Victoria River Roadhouse. Also, don't forget to sign up for Million Dollar Fish in case you catch the big one.

Days 2 & 3: Timber Creek

Timber Creek may be a little town in the Top End, but it is jam-packed with things to see and do, both with and without a 4WD. View remarkable Aboriginal rock art on a short hike down the cliff. The area is rich in animals and fauna, and also has a significant WWII link. Take the Bullita Stock Route if you're feeling daring. This course necessitates the use of a 4WD vehicle as well as off-road equipment. For the most up-to-date road conditions, please contact your local government.

Days 4 & 5: Keep River National Park

Continue west to the Keep River National Park for more exploration. Just 3km east of the NT/WA border, one of the Northern Territory's best kept secrets. Keep River National Park is home to a rich Aboriginal culture, as well as old rock art sites, spectacular land formations, and a wide variety of birds. There are numerous nearby walks from which to pick if you want to explore the park at your leisure. Some tracks require 4WD vehicles, although the majority are open to all vehicles.

Optional add-on: Bullo River Station

Bullo River will exceed your expectations, providing you with one-of-a-kind and original experiences. Remote waterholes, gorgeous helicopter flights, secluded picnic areas, and much more are all available.
