Kayaking in Mangrove Forest of Paravur Backwaters near Varkala and Kollam
Paravur Backwaters is one of the lesser known, tightly kept secret locations in southern Kerala. The Paravur Backwaters is safe and a sheltered waterbody, without much influence of the tidal effects. You can be assured of the safety as the depth of the lake in general is not more than 10 feet and not wider than 1 km. This ensures you don't paddle out and lose orientation in unknown waters. Our paddling center is located on a tiny sandbar (not wider than 70 meters) that sits between Arabian Sea and Paravur Backwaters. We were driving into the middle of nowhere in the dead of night, along small bumpy roads, with barely enough space to move, and a canopy dropped over the sides so we couldn’t see outside. It felt like we were taking part in an illegal smuggling operation. After 50 minutes we reached our starting point just as the sun was beginning to shed light on the dark sky. Once we reached the summit, we enjoyed a delicious meal among the changing clouds and mist. An hour later, bellies full and feeling well rested we started our descent. On the final stretch, we walked through a few tea plantations.
