In 1781, the leader Manuela Beltrán tore the "Edict", which was a document of utmost importance for the Spanish, turning this act into an important protest against the Spanish empire. This event originated the Revolution of the Comuneros, a very important event in the history of Colombia. Climbing in the Chicamocha Canyon is an activity that a lot of travelers miss as they do not know how to get to Colombia´s largest climbing park “La Mojarra”. The Chicamocha Canyon is known as the most impressive paragliding site in Colombia and one of the best in the world. Different to many other paragliding sites you are able to fly up to 2.000 meters above ground if the weather conditions permit. The platform is located about 1600 m above sea level while the river is about 550 m above sea level. The paragliding tandem flight itself takes about 15 minutes. Before starting the flight, you will get your equipment and detailed safety instructions. During the hike to the finca you will get to know the rural Colombian life at a place far away from the mainstream tourism. The finca, which is a small house in the countryside of the tropical rainforest, is located 1 driving hours of Bucaramanga. Driving that far, you will arrive in a region where there is no pollution from the city and where the people live almost completely independent. During the approx. 1 km hike that takes you about 200 m up the mountain, you will see different animals and the diversity of plants and fruits that Colombia offers such as cacao, bananas, papayas, passion fruits, etc. As you get higher up the hill you can enjoy the great astonishing view of the landscape which is a mixture of mountainous tropical rainforest and grassland. The Juan Curí waterfalls are with a total height of 250 meters one of the highest waterfalls in Colombia. In order to get to the waterfalls, you have to take a 25-minute hike from the parking lot. As the air gets more humid you will see how the landscape changes into a dense tropical rainforest. Arriving at the waterfall you will have the opportunity to jump into a swimming spot right beneath a 50-meter high part of the waterfall. If you like adventure, you can also climb down the ladders and ropes that are set up at the lower parts of the waterfalls. An optional activity for 70,000 COP (prices can vary) is climbing down the 50-meter part of the waterfall on a secured rope following the instructions of a professional rappelling guide. On the way back to Bucaramanga there are also other optional activities that can be done such as caving (30,000 COP), rafting (45,000 COP), bungee jumping 70 meters (70,000 COP), zip lining (30,000 COP), etc. (prices can change slightly within the year).
