Jewish History of Coimbra

Jewish History of Coimbra

This is an exclusive of mine, product of continuous research of GO! Walks Portugal guides and city archaeologists through the years! During this guided tour I will walk you through the memories of Jewish Coimbra. The first signs of the Jewish presence in Coimbra date back to the 10th Century, signaled by the transaction of land properties in a nearby village. We know that later, during the rule of D. Afonso Henriques, some guarantees and lands were granted to this community, which expanded through all the Portuguese territory up to the 16th century. More than just buildings or material testimonies of the Jewish presence, this is a tour about the rich history and culture of this community.

Aveiro, Costa Nova beach and Moliceiro Boat, half-day from Coimbra

Aveiro, Costa Nova beach and Moliceiro Boat, half-day from Coimbra

After picking up the participants in Coimbra, we will head to Aveiro, less than an hour away. We'll start aboard one of the traditional Moliceiros boats, which were formerly used to catch "moliço" and to transport seaweed and salt. After boarding, we will make a 45-minute journey through the urban channels that characterize and divide the city known as the “Portuguese Venice“. Then, we will go to Praia da Barra where we get to know the mouth of the Vouga river and the Aveiro estuary, barred by strong walls which gave rise to a beautiful beach without waves much sought after by families. We can also appreciate the lighthouse of Aveiro. After visiting, we continue to Costa Nova, one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and also with the most original neighborhood due to the houses painted with different colored stripes that border the Ria. After enjoying all that Costa Nova has to offer, we will return to Coimbra and finish the tour.

Fátima Sanctuary and Pastorinhos Village, half-day from Coimbra

Fátima Sanctuary and Pastorinhos Village, half-day from Coimbra

The Sanctuary of Fátima is, par excellence, a place of Christian pilgrimage and Catholic devotion, preserving the memory of the events that led to its foundation, namely the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima to the three shepherds - Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto - in 1917. In this tour, we will visit the place of Aljustrel, the so-called Aldeia de Valinhos, place where the 3 little shepherds lived. Arriving at the sanctuary, we will visit the Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Rosário. The building, which stands out for its 65 meters high tower, is the place where the remains of the three little shepherds rest. We will then visit the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, the most recent of the sanctuary, and the Capelinha das Aparições where, with a little luck, you will have the opportunity to attend a mass. After the visit we return to your hotel in Coimbra.

Schist Villages of Lousã Mountain, half-day from Coimbra

Schist Villages of Lousã Mountain, half-day from Coimbra

Travel to the Schist Villages of Serra da Lousã, a group of small villages of shepherds spread across the mountains. The visit begins at the Village of Cerdeira, right in the heart of the mountains. It is a place of artistic inspiration based on the School of Arts and Crafts that promote art and creativity in line with the silence and the surrounding natural wealth. We continue through the Village of Candal. Nestled in the mountains on a hill facing south, the visitor walks through the narrow, steep streets and from the top of the viewpoint contemplates the beautiful views over the valley. Right at the top of the mountain, we were dazzled by the magnificent views and play a little bit on the Baloiço do Trevim (Swing of Trevim).
