Winter Train Trips in Colorado

Colorado railroads are frequently only open for rides during the summer months due to the rugged terrain they traverse. Several, however, provide unique winter train excursions that include beautiful mountain views, exquisite dining, family-friendly holiday activities, and even ski slopes. Welcome aboard!

Amtrak's Winter Park Express

Amtrak has reinstated its route between Denver's Union Station and Winter Park Resort, formerly known as the Ski Train, for skiers and snowboarders looking for a relaxing ride to the slopes. During the winter months of January to March, the trip takes only two hours and runs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum

It was recently dubbed the "No. This fascinating journey goes through the lonely wilderness of the San Juan National Forest, earning it the title of "Best North American Train Trip" by National Geographic Traveler. While dual-activity packages are offered throughout the year, the Snowmobile Adventure Package is particularly popular, as is The Polar ExpressTM, a spectacular voyage to the North Pole that delights both believers and non-believers.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

This Canon City treasure offers a variety of travel alternatives, including a Santa Express Train in November and December, when pajama-clad teenagers and their parents join for a beautiful ride to a twinkling reproduction of Santa's grotto. Alternatively, book a three-course supper for two in a glass-domed rail car for you and a buddy.

Georgetown Loop Railroad

The people who work at Georgetown's renowned railroad go crazy on special occasions, and it's contagious. On November's Big Horn Sheep Festival Train, learn about some of Colorado's most valued residents with speeches from Colorado Parks & Wildlife professionals and a chance to see the horned beauties. Alternatively, ride Santa's Lighted Forest Train through the forest above town to see a synchronized holiday music and light spectacular. Beware, grumpy Scrooge types: this one is a heart-warmer.
