Breakfast at On Lok Yun, vintage café charm
Having a walk in Bangkok street, I could only imagine what Saigon could have been without such drastic change in term of cityscape, it should have been better reserved, better planned. Bangkok is a much better fusion of both the past and the contemporaries. So naturally one can easily find an old café opened since the 30s in Bangkok, and people seem to hype up this café a lot since the invention of "Instagram". Let's have look inside.
It gets really busy even in the early morning. This is 10am.
The furniture inside isn't necessarily ancient; perhaps not 80 years old, but rather reminiscent of styles from the 80s and 90s. It's often referred to as Bangkok's time capsule.
As for my taste in the food, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The offerings are your standard, straightforward American breakfast fare—omelets, ham, and sandwiches. The upside is they come at a very reasonable price, making them a fitting choice for a morning meal. While the flavors aren't mind-blowing, there's a certain charm to their simplicity that feels quite delightful. It's almost like a stroll down memory lane, evoking a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era, reminiscent of the Hollywood scene from the '90s depicted in films—people enjoying breakfast and coffee in diners, cruising in vintage cars, capturing moments with film cameras, and sporting classic sneakers. It's a kind of nostalgia that, truth be told, only truly existed in the realm of movies.
On Lok Yun has proven to be a delightful experience thus far, thanks to the warm and attentive welcome from the staff, its distinct and appealing aesthetic, and its wonderful portrayal of Bangkok's daily life and history. Checking out this cafe in the morning is highly recommended
