6 Picturesque Beach Towns Near Sydney To Visit This Summer

Coastal vistas and seafood feasts are hardly a novelty in the Harbour City but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a Sydney beach without the crowds and chaos. The biggest allure of NSW beach towns is the far fewer crowds compared to popular spots like Manly and Bondi. Balmy nights out, fresh seafood, plenty of laidback charm and outdoor adventures are promised in these small towns. Summer is currently peaking in the city which is all the more reason to head out of town for a beachy trip. Find some of our favourite spots below.

1. Bundeena

The village of Bundeena is located in Sydney’s Royal National Park, meaning beaches, bushwalks and excellent views are guaranteed. At just over an hour from Sydney, it makes for an excellent day trip. The beaches here are Jibbon Beach, Gunyah Beach, Horderns Beach and Bonnie Vale Beach. Hit the secluded Jibbon Beach if you’re after some peace and quiet or Gunyah Beach for a leisurely swim. Bundeena is also replete with lovely bushwalks, waterfalls and caves.

2. Kiama

The popular coastal town of Kiama is anchored by nine stunning beaches perfect for splashing around in, two cliffside cavers, iconic ocean blowholes and excellent natural scenery. It was also voted the most liveable out of 752 small towns across Australia and at just a 2-hour drive from Sydney, it’s well worth a visit. After your umpteenth visit to the Kiama Blowhole, head to the Seven Marks Gallery for fabulous art displays. Its many seaside restaurants and cafes and bike and hike trails are other Kiama essentials.

3. Avoca

One of NSW’s most popular beach towns, Avoca Beach is a prime summer destination. Aside from surfing and swimming in the aquamarine waves, the town also has its dedicated beachside market featuring over 100 stalls with live music and kid-friendly activities. Other things to do in the coastal town include kayaking and fishing. Don’t forget to check out the intimate Avoca Beach Theatre, long considered one of Australia’s most beautiful cinemas. Avoca can be reached in 90 minutes by car.

4. Jervis Bay

Jervis Bay is far from being an under-the-radar spot but there are many beaches aside from Hyams with the same beautiful coastline but far fewer people. Lesser-known spots include Chinamans Beach and Murrays Beach. The area is also a must-visit for nature lovers with national parks and wildlife to explore, stargazing tours and plenty of white sand beaches with unencumbered views.

5. Thirroul

The small town of Thirroul in Wollongong is a 1h 20min drive south of Sydney via the stunning Grand Pacific Drive and is the perfect place for those who want to disconnect. One of NSW’s most underrated beach towns charms with its beaches, pools, walking tracks and chic cafes lining the main street. Spend the day on Thirroul or McCauley’s Beach, catch a show at the art deco-inspired Anita’s Theatre or enjoy a soulful plate of seafood at its many coastal restaurants.

6. Eden

Akin to its biblical namesake, the beach town of Eden is chock full of natural beauty and lovely landscapes. Learn all about whales at the popular Killer Whale Museum, get a bird’s eye view of the coastline from the Green Cape Lighthouse or go on a whale-watching cruise. The 4.6 km Haycock Point to Barmouth Beach walking trail and the 4.5 km Pinnacles Loop Walking are highly recommended for outdoor adventure seekers. Eden is a little over six hours from Sydney but well worth the drive out of town.
