At the outer edges are Santa Croce, Castello, and Cannaregio, home of the original Ghetto. Beyond the six sestieri - neighborhoods - of the city itself, you'll want to hop aboard a vaporetto to its islands: Lido, Murano, Burano, and Torcello.
