The Valley of the Temples is today the largest Archaeological Park in the world (about 1300 hectares) and has been included in the UNESCO list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Located on a plateau not far from the sea, a stone's throw from the historic center of Agrigento, the Valley of the Temples is famous throughout the world for its imposing Doric temples which constitute one of the most significant examples of Greek culture and art. In the Valley of the Temples there are 12 temples in the Doric order, 3 sanctuaries, a large concentration of necropolises, the garden of Kolymbetra and the hypogea, the lower and upper Agora. There is also a Roman-era Olympeion and Bouleuterion (council chamber) on a Greek plan.
