Robben Island is World renowned Island notorious for the incarceration of South African political prisoners including Nelson Mandela. This was a common stopping point for passing ships in the 16th and 17th century. Housed a leper colony from 1846 to 1931 and also those judged insane were also sent there. From mid 1960s to 1991 Robben Island served as South Africa's maximum-security prison which housed most political prisoners including Nelson Mandela. Robben Island was declared a World Heritage site in 1999. The tour then takes you to Spice Route which is a very popular winery with multiple activities. You can taste wine, craft beer, ice cream, chocolate tasting, Gin tasting and amazing food. We then visit award wining Babylonstoren winery which has several activities besides wine tasting. There is a 35ha fruit and vegetables Garden and a Garden Spa. Visit the Spice Garden an Italian Bakery, a Healing Garden and Tea Ceremony. There also is a Greenhouse Restaurant and a Juicery.
