Callejoneada with the Estudiantina de Guanajuato
4.20(15)
The Callejoneadas are nighttime tours through the narrow alleys of Guanajuato's historic center, in which a group of musicians and singers, known as "estudiantina," accompany participants while they visit the city's most emblematic places.
During the tour, the members of the estudiantina perform traditional Mexican songs, while telling stories and anecdotes about the city and their own experiences as students. Participants usually dress in typical regional attire, such as hats and ponchos.
In addition to being a popular tourist activity, the Callejoneadas also have historical and cultural value, as they date back to the time when Guanajuato was an important mining city in the 19th century. At that time, university students formed musical groups to liven up the meetings and celebrations of the mine workers.
