Croatia

Croatia was part of Yugoslavia until 1991, and while it was never as isolated as the rest of the Eastern Bloc, it has typically remained off the beaten track for tourists. Today, however, Croatia is not only for adventurous travellers; in fact, the country has emerged as one of Europe’s top new destinations. This should come as no surprise: a vacation to Croatia allows you to experience the Adriatic coast, the major hubs of Zagreb and Dubrovnik, as well as a rich interior that, even today, many tourists miss.

The Adria coast has a short and expensive high season in July and August when the weather is at its best. You could obtain large travel bargains at other times of the year, but you'll lose out on the frenetic thrill of peak season. Away from the coast, hotel costs remain pretty consistent throughout the year. Winter can bring snow, however, it rarely falls near the shore.
